Chic Vacation Week: Japan

If you’re looking for a vacation with equal parts action and tranquility, consider visiting Japan. With its very diverse cities, travelers can experience fast paced city life in Tokyo, and then wind down in Kyoto for a more laid back experience, steeped in traditional Japanese culture.

City chic people will love Tokyo.

Spend an afternoon shopping in Shibuya

The Shibuya intersection is known as one of the busiest in the world. Once you successfully cross the street, explore the shops at Shibuya 109 mall for the latest fashions. The mall is supposedly Paris Hilton’s favorite place to shop in Tokyo. (Not that you really care, but it doesn’t hurt to know totally random information does it?)

Spend the night partying in Roppongi

At night, Roppongi is lit up. The lights rival those in Times Square, in NYC, and there are a whole host of things to do in the evening. Have dinner at an Izakaya, where drinks and small plates are popular.

After dinner, relax at a bar for a few hours. If you go to Hubs, split a liter shot with your friends. If shots aren’t your thing, try a Kansai Shirley Temple. It’s light and sweet. If you’re feeling adventurous, have the Tarantula, which was highly reccommeded by the people that frequent the bar.

When you leave the bar, pop into one of the karaoke places and belt out your favorite tunes. You burn calories while singing karaoke so it’s a good way to work off all of those drinks. The karaoke machine will tell you just how many calories you’ve burned, so turn it into a little competition between you and your friends. It’s fun! After all of that’s done, party the rest of the night away in one of the many nightclubs in the Roppongi area.

*Note: Smoking is allowed indoors at all of these places so you will come out smelling like an ashtray. Pack some Febreeze in your luggage.

Get some action at the Tsukiji Fish Market

Who needs sleep? After you’ve danced the night away, go directly to the Tsukiji Fish Market. Most of the action happens between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m, when buyers come to shop for fresh fish for their restaurants. You’ve never seen tuna like this before, trust! Watch your step in the market though, puddles of fish blood are all around.

Spend Sunday afternoon in Harajuku

Not everyone in Japan dresses like the girls in Gwen Stefani’s videos. But, if you want to catch a glimpse of the “Harajuku girls” head to the Harajuku area on a Sunday afternoon. You’ll find some very stylish girls and guys hanging out. If you ask nicely they might let you get a picture of them. So smile and say, “Shashin Ok?” When you’re done there, treat yourself to a crepe from one of the many stands in the area.

Bask in tradition in Kyoto

After you’ve seen all there is to see in Tokyo (well, that’s not really possible, but after you’ve seen everything you WANT to see), take the the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) to Kyoto for a taste of traditional Japan. It’s really like being on the set of Memoirs of a Geisha!

There are so many shrines and temples to see in Japan. Even if you visited ones in Tokyo (Sensoji Temple and the Meiji Shrine are popular tourist spots) have a look around at the ones in Kyoto too.

Kinkaku-ji, or the Golden Pavilion Temple is a postcard perfect scene

The Temple was ravaged by a fire in 1950. It was restored and painted with gold leaf which reflects resplendently in the mirror pond that surrounds it.

Shop for trinkets and then have a bowl tendon or tempura donburi (fried shrimp and rice) for dinner. Keep your eyes peeled for maikosans dressed in traditional Kimonos!

Between visits to shrines and temples, the nightlife, good food, and all of the sweets to be had (try something with red bean filling), Japan is the perfect destination for an O So Chic vacation!
