Chic Trends: The Bandage Dress

Thursday, August 7, 2008 Leave a Comment

It's Thursday. The weekend is right around the corner. Weekend plans are being finalized. That was easy - now you need an outfit. Nowadays, the jeans + nightlife combo is a part of a dying breed. Almost every woman is rocking a dress and a pair of sky-high pumps. Beyonce and her dancers strutted in form fitting, attention grabbing dresses and told us , "It's time to impress. Pull out your freakum dress." Nothing makes an impression like the "Bandage Dress" made famous by Hervé Legér.

Hervé Legér is a pioneer in body-conscious women's fashion. In the late 80s, the French designer created the "Bandage Dress" that so many of Hollywood's fashionistas love to this day. His inspiration came from ancient Egyptian mummification practices. Legér's creations combine Lycra, Lurex and other materials into bands of fabric that hug the female form. These dresses are not for shrinking violets. They are very form-fitting and unforgiving designs that speak for themselves: accessories optional.

This dusty pink number is one of Kim Kardashian's MANY Legér dresses. Since she's known for her curves, what better way to flaunt them? Joy Bryant looks great in this gorgeous, mustard colored Legér. Amanda Bynes shows us that she's no longer a Nickelodeon tween star in this blue & black bandage dress.

Christina Milian and Rihanna evoke old Hollywood glam in more embellished Legér creations. Sophia Bush's houndstooth-patterned Legér dress is a step away from the usually simple, but magnificently structured design.

Rihanna, Hervé Legér fan #2, looks O So Chic in a bandage skirt and simple tank top. She's pictured here in a blue skirt at the Venus Breeze "Celebrity Legs of A Goddess" Awards ceremony. Last week, she was seen heading to a NYC club in this fuschia & gray Legér skirt.

Hervé Legér, now under the helm of Max Azria, costs a pretty penny! The dresses will set you back at least $1,000 and the skirts are about $600. If this price-range isn't all that appealing to you, here are some bandage-esque options for you to try!

1. Tiered Tube Dress $29.80 (Forever 21)

2. Interlock Pencil Skirt $32 (American Apparel)

Nice! some people are afraid of using a fitted bandage dress, but just try using it with spanx, it does the work! Unfortunatly I don't have big budget for the Herve Leger dresses, I was able to find a couple of similar dresses at http://www.bellastretch.com/Bandage_Dresses_s/40.htm

and Amazon.com also has a few.
