Newsflash: Belts aren't just for holding your pants up anymore. Just because your garment doesn't have belt loops, doesn't mean you can't put on a belt. Belts are the perfect accessory to accentuate your curves or to spice up a dull outfit. Sex and the City stylist Patricia Fields swears by them. She urged the cast of the SATC movie and the ladies on Cashmere Mafia to add a belt to most outfits.

"I think belts are going to keep being very big. I like what a belt does to the shape of a woman. It’s like, okay girls, pull it in!," Fields told Nylon Magazine. Sarah Jessica Parker wore a vintage leather studded belt with so many outfits in the Sex and the City movie that she nicknamed it "Roger."

I'm not saying that you need to add a belt to every single ensemble, or give your belt a nickname, but if your outfit looks a little plain, or your dress does not show of your shape, add a belt to your natural waist line and see how flattering the outfit will look.

At the 2008 Teen Choice Awards in L.A. Hollywood's young stars proved that this trend is O So Chic ! Gossip Girls Blake Lively and Leighton Meester,and The Hills stars Lauren Conrad and Stephanie Pratt all donned belts on the red carpet. Lauren wore a skinny belt, Leighton and Stephanie opted for medium sized belts while Blake cinched her waist with a wide belt.


Michelle Obama also loves her belts. She was recently named one of Vanity Fair's International Best Dressed and given the title of "Commander in Sheath" after wearing a purple Maria Pinto Dress with a black Azzadine Alaia belt. (Check out Melanie O.'s spotlight on Michelle Obama's style here.)
