Obama for Fashion


Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is quite possibly the most fashionable presidential candidate ever. Senator Obama’s campaign is working with some of the industries top fashion designers to design merchandise for the for campaign website.

Diane von Furstenberg, Derek Lam, Tracey Reese, and Russell Simmons are part of the group of about 20 designers, who will design lines for BarackObama.com. The designers chosen are all part of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The merchandise, which will range from T-shirts to handbags, will be made in America.

Tracey Reese will contribute an appliqued Tee shirt. “I knew I needed to be participating and not just watching and hoping for the best,” she told the Washington Post. Russell Simmons also designed a tee shirt, it will read, “America Deserves Better.” Known for her wrap dresses, Diane von Furstenberg has designed a tote bag. Derek Lam has decided to use his platform to design something eco-friendly, an organic cotton back with the slogan, “A Fresh Start: Obama ’09.”

This is not the first time fashion designers have come up with Barack merchandise. Brother and sister Lorielle and Brandon Broussard designed Barackawear, a line of mens and women’s T-shirts, tank tops, hoodies, accessories, and even doggy Tee-shirts. Underwear designer Andrew Christian has developed a line of Barack Obama boxer-briefs.

The launch party for the new BarackObama.com merchandise, entitled “Runway to Change,” will be held at Charles Nolan’s studio in New York on September 9th. The event will take place during Mercedes-Benz fashion week. Designers have been asked to wear their designs to the event.
