The Williams Way

“I love fashion. It’s definitely a way of life.
When you wake up, what do you do? Find something to wear."

-- Venus Williams in the November Issue of Harper's Bazaar

With 34 Grand Slam titles and 5 Olympic gold medals between them, the Williams Sisters are Tennis Royalty. Venus and Serena are both ranked among the top ten players in the world; # 8 and #3, respectively. Their record shattering 120 mph + serves and intimidating lobs, make them forces to be reckoned with on the tennis courts. They are loved by many and although they are hated [on] by some, their talent is undeniable.

Not limiting their star quality to the tennis courts, Venus and Serena ventured into the world of fashion and design. In 2002, Venus established her own interior design firm - V Starr Interiors. Last fall, in conjunction with Steve & Barry’s, the reigning Wimbledon champion launched EleVen, “ a collection of women’s athletic and lifestyle clothing and sneakers.”

Serena’s women’s clothing venture, “Aneres” (Serena spelled backwards) was launched in 2004. It is described as a fashion line that “is in style yet follows its own trend." Aneres offers women clothing from career wear to eveningwear. Under her endorsement deal with Nike, the current U.S. Open champion has a line of tennis wear. She also had a collection under her former contract with Puma.

These endeavors are not surprising as the Williams Sisters are known for their atypical fashion sense on the courts. They abandoned the stark white polo and tennis skirt uniforms, for catsuits and halter dresses in a slew of colors and fabrics. Their bold outfits brought more color and excitement to the game and made tennis relevant to the fashion world.

Serena and Venus grace the pages of the November issue of Harper’s Bazaar, showcasing the intersection of fashion and sports. For the photoshoot, Serena and Venus donned dresses from Diane von Furstenberg to Versace; stilettos from Jimmy Choo and Miu Miu and were dripping in diamonds. In a situation they know all too well, the sisters “competed” on the courts. When asked who they thought won, Venus replied ,“I’m sure Serena would say I would win the fashion match.” Serena disagreed saying “Venus is so wrong. I mean, I’d win. Come on!”
