The Cat Eye

What do both Amy Winehouse & Angelina Jolie have in common?

If you thought “cat eye,” you are absolutely right! While Amy’s interpretation of the eye is a bit over the top, Angelina’s choice – the more wearable version – is the look we’re talking about today.

The cat eye is a great look for someone who wants to elongate and bring attention to their eyes. It’s purr-fect with a natural-looking face and lip. A great example of this slightly minimalistic approach to makeup is Beyoncé’s look at Sunday’s Oscars. Her darkened brows, faint sweep of blush and neutral lips, complemented her feline-esque eyes. Rihanna’s version of the cat-eye is more dramatic. Both the upper and lower lash lines are thickly lined and false lashes complete the look.

Whether in Milan, Paris, London, or New York, the cat/winged eye seems to always appears on someone’s Fashion Week runway. During Lanvin’s presentation for Spring 2009, the models all wore thick, black eyeliner that extended past the eye. As to not make the look extremely overpowering, the strong eye was countered with a natural face as its canvas. For Dior’s presentation at Paris Fashion Week – Haute Couture S/S 2009, the cat eye was achieved with false lashes that were longer on to the outer corners.

Achieving the winged look may be a bit tricky at first. If you’re a beginner, practice with a pencil and then once your skills improve, use either a liquid or cream liner to achieve the look. You can also use pencil liner to outline your desired shape before filling it in. There isn’t one particular strategy to creating the cat-eye. Eye shapes differ as do eye lining application techniques. Some of you may start at the corners (inner/outer) and others in the middle. Learning how to create the winged look is easier with visuals. Whether you’re going for a simple, winged cat eye, or a smokey cat eye, here are some fierce feline eye tutorials for you. Practice makes perfect!
