While flirty, feminine apparel is more common in the warmer months, this spring, menswear inspired style is no shrinking violet. For Spring 2009, the boyfriend look is everywhere. Yes. It is the boyfriend trend, but [luckily] “No Boyfriend Necessary.” What is the boyfriend trend? It’s a more masculine style that’s supposed to look like you raided your boyfriend’s closet. The jackets are more masculine, sometimes boxier and slouchy. The jeans have a lower rise, are a bit baggy and give an all around laid-back look.
Kerry Washington was seen in this fab Louis Vuitton ensemble straight off of the Spring 2009 runway at Essence Magazine’s “Black Women in Hollywood” Luncheon. She takes the boyfriend blazer and transforms it with an obi belt and feather skirt. Last summer, before the trend gained momentum, Katie Holmes was photographed rocking a casual, boyfriend jeans and tee outfit, while out & about in NYC.
The slightly androgynous style was popular during Fashion Week Spring 2009.

In order not to look like you’re wearing an entirely ill-fitting outfit, strive for a balance. If you’re wearing boyfriend jeans, counter the bagginess with a more fitted top. For additional feminine flair, break out your hottest spring sandals! If you’re wearing a boyfriend blazer, try pairing it with a cute skirt or skinny/straight leg jeans. Accessorize with a belt and long necklace to complete the look.
