Chrisette Michele: Epiphany

"And then it comes to me like an epiphany…” is the first line uttered on Chrisette Michele’s sophomore effort Epiphany. Throughout the album, the Long Island native grants listeners full access on a journey of her relationship revelations. Epiphany plays out like the Diary of Chrisette Michele and the heartfelt lyrics & vocals will surely connect with her fans.

On “Blame It On Me”, an emotional Chrisette is so fed up with her rocky relationship that she volunteers to take responsibility for its demise. “Say it’s my fault. Say that I left you outside in the cold with a broken heart. I really don’t care…as long as it’s over.” “What You Do” ft. Ne-Yo serves as the “actions speak louder than words” PSA on the album. On “All I Ever Think About” Chrisette showcases a more contemporary R&B sound while illustrating how much she misses her man. Just like Babyface’s “I only think of you on two occasions: day & night, “ Chrisette sings about a love that consumes her thoughts “from the rising of the moon til the setting of the sun.”

When you hear “Mr. Right,” you automatically think of Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good” and Lauryn Hill’s “Doo-Wop (That Thing).” That combination, sets the stage for an infatuated Chrisette to explain the paralyzing effect Mr. Right has on her. “I can’t think. I can’t move. I can’t speak & I’m convinced your love is mine.” The “hand-clapping” & Chrisette’s matter-of-fact delivery makes “Porcelain Doll” the female anthem of Epiphany. She demands the respect due to a woman and sings “If you wanna cradle me like a little girl and lock me down, I’m not your possession. I’m a full grown woman. I am not your porcelain doll.”

The final chapter of Ms. Michele’s Epiphany sounds like the closing, triumphant score out of a movie. She ends the album on a dramatic, yet reflective note on "I'm Okay" singing, "Time don’t stop and wait for pain. Pain does fade away in time." With the mixed emotions expressed on the album, at the end, Chrisette finally convinces herself that’s she “just fine" and that "you fade away hardly crossed my mind."

Chrisette Michelle's debut album, I Am, set the bar high & she definitely did not disappoint with her follow-up, Epiphany. Her sultry vocal range is superb. The presence of passion & raw emotions is undeniable. Epiphany is great from beginning to end. Trust me.
