The newest trend in nail design is a throwback to the days of old Hollywood glamour. Moon manicures, a style that made its first appearance in the 1920s, are making a comeback. A twist on the ever popular French manicure, moon manis feature a a white or nude color at the base or crescent shaped area of the nail.Dita Von Teese has been sporting the moon manicure for quite some time. A fan of retro fashion, Von Teese may have gotten the idea for the moon mani from her mother, a manicurist. The underwear designer/actress is not the only fan of the style, models at the Christian Dior and Ruffian Fall 2009 shows wore the moon manicures with a nude base on the runways. The models at Thakoon wore the original moon manicure style, with only the middle of their nails painted. The crescent and tips of their nails were white.
The moon manicure is a fun change from the traditional manicure. Can't wait to try out the moon mani? Head to the nearest salon with a picture of the style, or try it yourself. Here's how:
- Start by covering clean nails with a clear base coat.
- Next, paint your entire nail the color you want the crescent to be.
- Once the crescent color is dry, use a French manicure sticker or a paper reinforcement (got that idea from the Girls in the Beauty Dept. at Glamour) to separate the crescent from the rest of the nail. Position the stickers in relation to your nail size. Meaning, the nail on your thumb is your widest nail, this crescent should be larger than the crescent on your pinky.
- Then, starting below the crescent shaped sticker, cover the rest of your nail with two coats of the bolder color and let dry.
- Remove stickers.
- Finish with a clear top coat, sit back, and admire your handy work as your nails dry.

Wow! This trend is one I have yet to be in the know about. Great Post!
And because of easy access through google reader, I haven't come to the blog in a while but it looks amazing! I like it a lot. Its simplicity is beautiful.
I think I'll try this out this week. I heard about it a while ago, but didn't want to make a fashion faux pas - but i find it simple and chic Thanks for the tip ladies!
