Girl Talk Cause Party 2010: Becca’s Closet

Prom is one of the most exciting times in a teenage girl’s life. Unless, like me, your limo driver arrives several hours late, gets lost on the way to the prom and your date decides he wants to wear his hair in Shirley Temple curls, but, I digress.

Prom is one of the most exciting times in a teenage girl’s life. There’s the picking out of the dress, finding a date, and celebrating the end of your high school career. However, buying the dress, shoes, and accessories and paying for the prom tickets and limo can be a great hardship for some families. That’s why for our second annual Girl Talk Cause party, we decided to collect formal dresses for the Bayside Chapter of Becca’s Closet, a national organization that provides prom dresses to girls in need. (Our first cause party was sponsored by Johnson’s Body Care and we raised money for the Young Women’s Leadership School of East Harlem).
On Saturday June 12th, we hosted “Cocktails for Cause 2010: Becca’s Closet.” My guest room was turned into an “event hall,” and each person was asked to donate at least one formal dress to this great cause. While it’s been quite a few years since our guests attended their proms, we were reminded of how special a time it is as we caught a glimpse of my 17-year-old neighbor and her prom date getting into their limo.
Our final walk through. I think we should get a spot on the runways of a couple of the shows during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, don’t you?
So far, we’ve collected 28 beautiful dresses and two pairs of shoes. We thought it would be a good idea to have each person model the dress they were donating, but only two of our 18 guests were willing to do so. I joined them in putting on a fashion show in all of the donated dresses.

As the three of us strut our stuff down the makeshift catwalk, guests enjoyed a three course meal and the O So Chic Signature Cocktail, created especially for the event. The recipe calls for Smirnoff Cranberry Vodka, Lychii Liquor and Ocean Spray Ruby Pomegranate. Try it. You’ll love it. Just remember you read about it here first!

After the fashion show we surprised our guests with gift bags filled with great products donated by Johnson’s Baby Oil, Completely Bare Hi-Tech Spa, Softlips, Certain Dri, and Rohto. It was a wonderful end to a fabulous afternoon, if I do say so myself.

Becca’s Closet is a nationwide organization with chapters all across the country. Please visit to find out how you can donate to this great cause.
