Denim on Denim | Chic or Not So Chic

Looks from Elie Tahari, Cynthia Steffe and Just Cavalli Spring 2011 shows

Denim on denim was all over the Spring runways. Wide legged jean pants were paired with denim blouses and jean shorts with denim vests and printed jeans worked well with a denim blazer.

I was a huge fan of denim on denim in the 90s and early aughts. I even wore a gold denim Girbaud suit to school for my 16th birthday. A few years later I snagged a fab 3-piece, pin-striped Dolce and Gabbana suit from my cousin’s closet but denim on denim had already gone out of style (hence the reason she was willing to give me the suit). I’ve worn the vest every now and then, but the pants and jacket have remained untouched for years.

Well, now the trend is back and though it looked good on the runway, I can’t help but grimace when I see people wearing it on the streets because they are mixing washes. Take a quick trip to the Gap or any jeans shop and you’ll see there are tons of different denim washes – medium, white, saturated, acid (eek!), to name a few. While these washes are great on their own, they can look a hot mess when paired together. Denim on denim works best when the pieces are the same hue.

Now that denim on denim is back in style, I can finally break out that Dolce and Gabbana suit. Well, the jeans and the vest. I promise it’s all the same shade of blue.

What’s your take on this trend? Is it chic or not so chic?
