Living Single in NYC

I was catching up with an old friend when it dawned on us that most of the people we grew up with are getting married and settling down. Every day someone announces an engagement or shows off a baby bump. We’re at that age when the kids we grew up with begin to have families of their own. Before I get to that stage, I wanted to try living on my own in NYC. That’s why I moved out of my mom’s house and into my own apartment at the top of the year.

I’ve been having a great time turning my studio into the perfect bachelorette pad. I’ve been scouring furniture shops, home stores and vintage boutiques in search of the perfect furniture, dinnerware and even shower curtains. My first major purchase was a plush mattress and a lavender and gold floral bed set. Right now, I’m trying to decide between getting a tufted purple couch or a traditional beige one. I think purple will win out. I’m sure once I settle down and decide to get married (this is not to say this will happen any time soon, but I’m a firm believer in speaking things in to existence), my significant other will want to have a some say in the firmness of the bed, my monopolizing of the closet space, the size of the TV, or how much I spend on handbags. So, I’m relishing in not having to answer to anyone about my choices this time around.

Moving out on my own was a huge leap. I have to pay rent and remember to do things like pay my cable and internet bill, and take out the garbage. It was a huge change but I’m so very happy I did it.

What’s the next major leap in your life?
