#GenKnow – Debunking Myths & Empowering Young Women

As you may remember, I participated in a roundtable discussion in NYC, with other bloggers, as part of Kotex’s Generation Know campaign. Generation Know is a program educating young women on women’s health, encouraging them to embrace their bodies and making discussion of the woman’s body less taboo and more commonplace.

On and off camera, we spoke about everything affecting young women today: bullying, social media’s impact on the dissemination of information and women’s health (particularly periods). Embarrassing (and sometimes hilarious) first period tales broke the ice, while personal stories made us reflect and actually appreciate the monthly visitor.

We shared the discreet nicknames we had for our period, all of the tales we have been told about periods, and had the opportunity to debunk those pervasive myths. (Note: 1. Drinking pineapple juice is not an effective form of birth control. 2. Sharks will not attack you just because you are on your cycle. 3. You CAN most definitely get pregnant while on your period.)

By the end of the day, and after large general discussions and smaller themed chats, it became apparent that while “period talk” is something most of us stray away from, we women have similar gripes, concerns and experiences. Participating in Generation Know roundtable showed us that sparking a conversation with our peers, siblings, mentees and maybe even our mothers and older relatives, is the first major step in creating and fostering a world where women’s bodies (and their functions) are understood and celebrated.
