The Alvin & Friends Restaurant Experience (@AFRestaurant)

Last weekend, I attended a birthday brunch at Alvin & Friends Restaurant in New Rochelle, NY. I first heard of Alvin & Friends Restaurant, in passing, a few weeks prior. A week later, I was dining at the Westchester spot.

Alvin & Friends Restaurant is owned by husband and wife duo–Alvin & Gwen Clayton. The cuisine served there is the best of both worlds: Southern and Caribbean. The “Best Fried Chicken in Weatchester,” catfish po’boy and shrimp & grits share the menu with ackee & saltfish, jerk chicken and coconut rice & peas.

Although I was FAMISHED, it took me a while to figure out what I would be ordering. I liked every single option on the brunch menu! Gosh! [My suggestion: if you go to Alvin & Friends with others, encourage everyone to order different meals. That way, you can get a taste of everything.] I always default to shrimp and creamy grits, when available, so I decided to switch it up. I ordered the catfish po’boy served on a croissant with lemongrass rémoulade and mixed green salad. Yum! So light and tasty, yet filling.

The Southern-Caribbean fusion is seen and felt beyond the menu offerings. When you walk into Alvin & Friends, it feels like you’ve stepped into a spacious Southern home—an estate even. The colorful, Matisse-inspired paintings that adorn the walls, capture the vibrancy of Caribbean culture and music rooted in the South. Oh! How could I forget the live jazz band?!

Towards the end of brunch, Alvin (who is very much present in the restaurant) came around to chat with A&F patrons. I learned so much about him, his modeling career and the fact that he is the self-taught artist behind the restaurant’s Matisse-inspired paintings. [[Fun fact: Alvin Clayton’s paintings are seen throughout The Best Man Holiday movie. I was definitely on the lookout for them when I went to the screening!]

Now you see why this post is entitled: “The Alvin & Friends Restaurant Experience.” Of course food is a focal point of dining, but the experience—as a whole—is what makes dining out so enjoyable. If you’re ever in the Westchester area, check out Alvin & Friends. Tell them Melanie from O So Chic sent ya!
