What Songs Are on Your Workout Playlist?


Whether it’s the goals you set or your gym partner, workout motivation comes from a variety of sources. While accountability gets you to the gym, track (or wherever you work out), it’s the music that helps you push through the routine. (Well, it does for me!) Nothing ruins your exercise flow like a sloooow R&B song coming through your headphones in the middle of of a Speedy Gonzalez stride on the elliptical. Then–if you’re like me–you slow down or pause in order to find a more upbeat track. Momentum is lost and you have to get back in the groove.

To combat this issue, I came up with the o so obvious idea of a workout playlist. (Duh!) The roughly 50 songs cross all genres and decades. On my “Workout Plan” playlist, Michael Jackson hits are in good company with Britney Spears, music from Pharrell’s N.E.R.D. days, Nigerian tunes and even contemporary gospel. When a song is totally in sync with the particular exercise, the more effortless the strenuous routine seems. It’s almost as if the lyrics, beat and bass line serve as a personal trainer/drill instructor. In the words of Britney Spears,

You want a hot body? You want a Bugatti? You want a Maserati? You better work….

Britney’s “Work *****” is a GREAT work out song. It’s also my push-through-the-fatigue-Mel-you’re-almost-there track. I like to keep a fresh rotation of exercise music, so I’m always looking for more songs to add to my Workout Plan playlist. So tell me: what are you favorite songs to work out to?   1. My playlist faves are as follows: DMX and Britney. I’ll add in some Ciara because just thinking of her stomach makes me want to push myself even further. I also like Kanye, Lady Gaga, the Spice Girls and N*SYNC. They just keep me moving.

  2. I’m a huge fun of DJ remixes (and all upbeat music really) to get me through my workout. I use Spotify to help plan my group classes and personals workouts, don’t know what I’d do without it. A few of my go to favorites are Breakin’ a Sweat – Zedd Remix by Skrillex and Earthquake by Labrinth & Busta Rhymes

  3. I like the mixes I find at Rock My Run, but I’m always on the lookout for new ideas!
