It’s funny. Sometimes well-intentioned “support” may actually feel like anything but.
Before graduating from college, I decided I was going to take a break between getting my degree and applying to law school. The break was planned and for good reason but some people expressed concern. They were worried that taking a short break would become a permanent one. One person told me, “Mel, if you don’t go to law school now, you’ll never go!” Even when I tried to assuage all of the concern, it didn’t seem to make a dent. My parents weren’t concerned about my break, so I didn’t see why anyone else would take issue with it.
My stance on Breakgate (lol) was: I’ve dreamt of being a lawyer since I was 11. In order to become a lawyer, I would have to go to law school and the sooner, the better. See? Simple as pie! I knew what I was doing and I was 100% sure that taking a break would be the best thing for me. I took my scheduled break, applied to law schools, took my LSAT and the rest is history.
A few exams and a couple of swearing in ceremonies later, I’m a licensed attorney in two states and living my life like it’s golden! I can’t imagine why anyone who knows me would think I wouldn’t follow through with realizing my dreams! I mean…have we met? One of my mantras and favorite quotes is: “So it is written, so shall it be done.” Once I commit to doing something, I stay the course!
