DIY Fabric Button Earrings Tutorial

Share

I’ve been on a DIY run recently. Clothing, beauty products, cocktails–you name it, I’ve made it. I was looking to buy round, fabric button earrings and came across a cute pair. Thing is–they were $60. Uhhh yeeeaah…no! I figured I’d take the DIY route and make the fabric button earrings myself. It would surely cost much less than $60 to make and would be customized to my liking. I have tons of ankara and madras fabric, so finding a great print wouldn’t be a problem.

What you’ll need to make the DIY Fabric Button Earrings:

  • Cover buttons (I used the Dritz Cover Buttons size 60 – (1 .5 in))
  • Cover button mold + pusher (part of most Cover Button Kits)
  • Fabric
  • Craft Glue (I used E-6000 adhesive)
  • Earring posts
  • Earring backs (clutch, nuts or pads — whatever your preference)
  • Pliers/scissors (You will only need these to remove the loop from the wire back cover buttons. The flat back buttons are already prepped for use as earrings.)

1. Cut out a piece of fabric that is a little bit bigger than your cover button. The Dritz packaging includes a circle size guide, but I eyeballed my fabric and cut it into a square.

2. Place the fabric into the cover button mold.

3. Place the cover button front on top of the fabric in the mold.

4. Tuck in any excess fabric.

5. Place the cover button back on top. (The back’s raised edges should be facing upwards.)

6. Take the cover button pusher and press it into the back. You should hear a “pop.”

7. Remove the assembled button from the mold.

8. If the button has a wire back, use your pliers/scissors to remove the wire. (A squeeze and wiggle should work.)

9. Decide where you would like to place your earring posts. (Posts at the top will allow the earrings to hang.)
